A land-locked, mountainous country in Central Asia, the Kyrgyz Republic has seen steady economic growth. Nonetheless, income levels remain below the regional average, and high inflation has eroded the purchasing power of the country's largely rural population.  

Food insecurity is a persistent challenge, with more than 4 in 10 people unable to afford a nutritious diet, and three-quarters of the population relying on negative coping strategies such as taking on debt, or spending less on healthcare to pay for food. Malnutrition remains widespread, with 21 percent of children under 5 suffering from anemia.  

A mix of factors contributes to the country's fragile food security, including reliance on remittances, large-scale migrant returns, limited agricultural self-sufficiency, climate shocks and political tensions that disrupt energy, fertilizer and food markets. With high mountains covering 93 percent of its territory, the Kyrgyz Republic is highly prone to natural disasters, especially mudflows.
